You can fix this problem quickly so that your range passes with flying colors. Access the gas valve behind the stove. Locate the malfunctioning igniter on the stove. Rub a toothbrush across the malfunctioning ignitor to remove any residue. Insert a needle into the ignitor's pilot hole, if equipped. Problem: It's clogged with food debris Whether it's grease buildup or food crumbs, one of the most common causes for a gas burner that has trouble igniting is debris blocking gas flow to the igniter. Finally, clean any remaining debris out of the burner holes with a toothpick, sewing needle or compressed air. One of the most common reasons a gas stove starts clicking is because the burner cap is out of alignment. Once the cooktop is completely cool, remove the burner grate to access the cap beneath it. Remove the cap and re-center it on the base. Try lighting the burner again. The igniter may also need to be replaced; igniters typically cost between $40 and $80. Clean the gas stove igniter and burner holes if the burner won't light. Brush the igniter with a stiff toothbrush to remove gunk. Clean out the gas stove burner holes with a needle.
Food Debris Causing Igniters to Click When Off Unplug the power source. Remove the burner cap. Use a toothbrush or other small scrubber to remove/dislodge food. Around burner. Under knobs. Around igniter. Use a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol to get rid of the last little bits of buildup. Replace burner cap & get to cookin'!
You may need to remove the bottom oven cover to expose the igniter. Clean the igniter with a toothbrush to remove dirt and debris. Gently scrub the surface of the igniter with the toothbrush and softly blow on it when finished to remove the debris. This will facilitate better sparking.
The hot surface igniter is used in modern gas oven burners to open the gas valve and to ignite the gas. As the igniter draws electric current it will heat to a high temperature and glow, as well as cause the bi metal in the oven safety valve to warp and open the valve releasing the gas to be ignited.
How to Lift the Lid of a Hotpoint Oven Remove the grates from the top of the stove. Place your thumbs in front of the stove in the groove between the top and the main oven body. Lift the top straight up until it is fully open, but do not push it beyond its limit. Place the holding rod underneath the top to hold it up while you work.
You can still manually light nearly every modern gas stove with a match or lighter, even if the igniter is broken. Matches are safer and will work better than typical cigarette lighters. Light match. Hold very close to the holes in the center of the burner that fire usually comes out of.
