Active SETI. Active SETI, also known as messaging to extraterrestrial intelligence (METI), consists of sending signals into space in the hope that they will be picked up by an alien intelligence. SETI@home was off and running. The rest is history: SETI@home went online on May 17, 1999, and was an immediate and unprecedented hit. Within a few months more than a million people across the globe were processing work units on their personal computers, and within a year the number was approaching two million. SETI@home searches for possible evidence of radio transmissions from extraterrestrial intelligence using observational data from the Arecibo radio telescope and the Green Bank Telescope. The data is taken "piggyback" or "passively" while the telescope is used for other scientific programs.
