Knives are placed to right with the sharp blade facing the plate. Soup spoons go to the right of the knives. Dessert forks and spoons should be placed above the plate with the fork tip pointing right and the spoon left. Knives – Knives are always placed on the right side of the plate, with the cutting blade facing inwards towards the plate. The exception is the butter knife which is placed on the butter plate, with the blade pointing downwards and left. Forks (almost always) sit to the left of the plate, while knives and spoons go to the right. Water glass sits above the knife. Knife blades face in the direction of the plate. Place setting In the West, forks, plate, butter knife, and napkin generally are placed to the left of the dinner plate, and knives, spoons, stemware and tumblers, cups, and saucers to the right. The dessert spoon (or dessert knife) is laid on the table above the dinner plate in a horizontal position, handle facing right. The dessert fork is laid beneath the dessert spoon (or dessert knife), handle facing left. The dessert utensils may also be presented on the dessert plate in the same way as formal service.
- Passing on place mats or tablecloths. When having a meal, it's best to use something to protect your table from spills. Place mats are great for daily dining, but a tablecloth will be your best choice for a large group. "When you're not using your table, you should enjoy the beautiful wood, " Fritz says.
For a formal table: Place a charger, or presentation plate, at every place setting. Finally, if you don't have a set of chargers or just don't want to bother, you can cheat with the dinner plate instead, or simply use placemats.
Like all other pieces of cutlery, a steak knife has a specific place in a table setting. The pieces used and number of pieces may vary based on the food being served. The steak knife belongs to the right of the dinner plate, sharp edge facing the plate; it takes the place of the dinner knife.
Forks go on the left, with the salad fork first, and then the dinner fork beside the plate. On the right side of the plate, you will find the knife, appetizer or salad knife, spoon, soup spoon, and oyster fork. The knife blades should be positioned with the cutting sides closest to the plate.
Your fork is in your left hand with the tines pointing down and your knife is in your right hand because most peoples right hand is stronger and therefore more suited to the activity of cutting.
Then Forks, Spoons and Knives goes on the outside, and then your main course fork. If you can't tell the two apart, remember that the salad fork is smaller. Forks should be placed on the left side of the plate, knives and spoons on the right (except for your dessert spoons – those go above the dinner plate).
The plates should sit in the centre of the place setting. The plate, napkin and cutlery should be places 1-2 inches away from the edge of the table. Glassware should be set above and to the right of the dinner plate, in order of water glass, red wine, white wine from left to right. Side plates go to the left.
When you've finished eating, the knife and fork are placed side by side on the right side of the plate in the 4 o'clock position, with the fork on the inside, tines up, and the knife on the outside, blade in.
If the salad is to be served first, and fish second, then the forks would be arranged (left to right): salad fork, fish fork, dinner fork. Note: It is the only fork ever placed on the right of the plate.
It so because most Indians are right handed. The larger plate on the right contains the bread(roti/paratha) as you are comfortable eating them with your right hand there. On the other side, (left) you have a smaller (quarter plate) that is well suited for eating the main course meals( Daal/Paneer etc).
Table Setting 101 The first and basic rule to get you started is: Utensils are placed in the order of use; from the outside in. A second rule, with only a few exceptions, is: Forks go to the left of the plate, and knives and spoons go to the right. Finally, only set the table with utensils you will use.
